HCV prevalence much lower than initially believed in Cameroon

High estimates of HCV prevalence in Cameroon (~13% before 2011) have led to the understanding that the country was one of high endemicity. Recent analyses, however, show that HCV prevalence is lower than initially believed in the country. It is estimated that there are 164 000 (117 000 -184 000) viremic individuals in 2015, corresponding to a 0.7% viremic prevalence. The prevalence of anti-HCV in the total population was estimated at 1.03% based on a survey in individuals aged 15 – 59. Further analyses found that maintaining the current treatment paradigm would have a small impact on the burden of advanced disease (1% decrease).
